Instagram has launched today in some countries Instagram Direct, an application that in fact replaces all the Direct modality present in the social platform owned by Facebook. For the time being, this is an experiment involving only a few countries: Chile, Israel, Portugal, Turkey, Uruguay and Italy. Once Direct is installed, available for Android and iOS, the functionality disappears completely from Instagram, becoming a stand-alone application.
In short, Instagram is trying to follow the steps of Facebook (not by chance), when the social platform decided to leave Messenger to create an application for itself. Zuckerberg’s motivation was as follows:”On the mobile device, each application can only focus on doing one thing right. And, apparently, the same will happen in the case of Instagram, where the social aspect of sharing (Instagram) is separated from the functionality of messaging, more private and therefore worthy of being the “heart” of an individual application (Direct).
Separating Direct from Instagram is not insignificant
The decision to separate Direct from Instagram is not insignificant, and is based on the success of messaging applications in the market and, in particular, Direct itself: as of April 2017 there were 375 million monthly users, a significant figure that led the company to try to make the most of this situation.
According to Hemal Shah, an Instagram product manager:
We want Instagram to be a place for all of your moments, and private sharing with close friends is an important part of that. Direct has grown within Instagram over the past four years, but we can make it even better if it stands on its own. We can push the boundaries to create the fastest and most creative space for private sharing when Direct is a camera-first, standalone app.
The application itself is very simple: in a perfect Snapchat style, the camera screen opens (even if you don’t want to send any images). To the left is the profile screen for accessing your data and settings, while to the right is the message input box.
Switching between applications (that is, from Instagram to Direct and vice versa) is really simple: in fact, you just need to go directly from the Direct inbox to display the Instagram logo and quickly switch to the other application. Similarly, a blow to the right of Instagram will cause the Direct logo to appear to open the new messaging application. There are also four unique filters,”useful” for sharing private messages with images of your contacts.
In short, the Instagram doubles: some will prefer the whole in one, others will be happy to keep the “public” social aspect separate from the “private” aspect. A matter of habit.
Below is the link to download Instagram Direct from the Google Play Store, but only for the countries listed above. You can download the APK from the Android application and install it directly on your device. For iOS it has not yet appeared in the App Store, but we will update the article as soon as it is available.
